Santuario De Guadalupe
Established in the 1770s, the Santuario de Guadalupe is considered the “crown jewel of Santa Fe”. Groups and individuals from all over the world visit this enduring landmark in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is widely regarded as the oldest standing shrine in the United States with the original church having been built off a latin cross design. The adobe walls are 3 feet thick and contain the Archdiocese of Santa Fe’s collection of New Mexican santos (carved images of the saints), Italian Renaissance paintings, and Mexican baroque paintings. Among the treasured works is Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the largest and finest oil paints of the Spanish Southwest, dated 1783 and signed by Jose de Alzibar, one of Mexico’s most renowned painters.
